Electrical insulation materials on oil type transformers play a significant role in ensuring the normal operation and stability of transformer. They are typically used for inter-turn and inter-layer insulation of windings, as well as for insulation support and isolation between windings and the core and tank.
The most commonly used insulation materials include diamond dotted paper, precompressed pressboard, kraft paper etc. They share a common characteristic, their electrical strength is significantly improved after being impregnated with oil, and their heat resistance is generally Class A (105℃).
Modern transformers often use materials with higher thermal stability. However, there is a prerequisite for achieving this goal: high-quality raw materials must be used. For example, our precompressed paperboard insists on using high-purity sulfate wood pulp, which is suitable for IEC 60641 standard.
The combination of oil and paper is the core insulation method in oil-immersed transformers. The two materials complement each other: the oil fills the pores in the paper, increasing the overall dielectric strength; the paper layer blocks conductive paths formed by impurities in the oil, delaying aging. This structure can withstand high electric field strengths, making it particularly suitable for high-voltage transformers. The insulation system of an oil-immersed transformer is an organic whole in which oil and solid insulation materials work together. Its core purpose is to ensure the long-term stable insulation performance and heat dissipation capacity of the transformer under severe electrical, thermal, and mechanical stresses.
