Ordinary crepe insulating paper is a high-resistance insulating material. It relies on cellulose to provide electrical isolation with high resistivity. Its main function is to withstand voltage and block electric current. Electrical Insulation Semiconductor Crepe Paper is blended with uniform semi-conductive fillers. It has stable medium-low surface resistivity. It does not serve as main insulation. Its core function is to homogenize electric field, shield sharp edges and eliminate concentrated local electric field. Different material characteristics define their applicable scenarios.
Ordinary crepe insulating paper is a supporting material for oil-impregnated main insulation. With good elongation, oil absorption and dielectric strength, it acts as insulating separator. It is widely used in transformers and reactors for inter-layer insulation, inter-turn insulation, conductor wrapping and cushion insulation. It bears long-term power frequency voltage and separates conductors at different potentials to form oil-paper composite insulation after oil impregnation.
It is also used for low-voltage lead wrapping, insulation cylinder lining and places requiring extra insulation clearance. These areas have gentle electric field distribution without shielding demand, only reliable insulation and mechanical cushioning are required.
Electrical Insulation Semiconductor Crepe Paper is not used as main insulation. It is applied at high-voltage areas with distorted electric field, sharp edges, end faces, lead terminals and static accumulation spots for electric field grading and shielding. Typical locations include transformer HV coil ends, static ring wrapping, lead bends, metal shield wrapping and bushing root areas.
Cut edges and corners of high-voltage coil conductors cause electric field concentration. If only ordinary crepe paper is used, excessive local field strength will trigger partial discharge. Wrapping with semi-conductive crepe paper smooths surface potential and reduces partial discharge risk.
It is also used in reactors, special high-voltage instrument transformers and internal shielding of oil-immersed bushings, suitable for flexible shielding structures that need wrapping on irregular surfaces.
In high-voltage transformer end structures, the two materials are often used together. Semi-conductive crepe paper is wrapped first around metal sharp corners and static rings for field grading. Multiple layers of ordinary crepe insulating paper are wrapped outside as main insulation to withstand voltage. They are not interchangeable. Ordinary crepe paper cannot homogenize electric field at sharp shielding positions. Using semi-conductive crepe paper as inter-layer main insulation will lead to insulation failure.
Ordinary crepe insulating paper: high insulation, voltage resistance; application: inter-turn, inter-layer, conductor main insulation and cushion; working area: uniform electric field.
Electrical Insulation Semiconductor Crepe Paper: controlled semi-conductivity, field grading; application: coil ends, static rings, sharp lead shielding; working area: distorted and concentrated electric field.
