What are the storage conditions and shelf life requirements for Unidirectional Glass Fiber Tapes

2026-10-15 0 Leave me a message

Unidirectional Glass Fiber Tapes is a high-performance reinforcing material widely used in structural reinforcement, wind power, pressure vessels, shipbuilding and composite manufacturing. Its mechanical properties depend heavily on proper storage. Improper storage will cause moisture absorption, aging of sizing agent, fiber delamination and reduced resin wettability, directly lowering the tensile strength of finished composite parts. There are obvious differences in storage specifications between dry unidirectional fiberglass tape and prepreg unidirectional fiberglass tape.

Storage Conditions for Dry Unidirectional Fiberglass Tape

Dry Unidirectional Glass Fiber Tapes refers to the dry reinforcement tape without pre-impregnated resin.

       1. Temperature requirement: Store in a cool warehouse, recommended ambient temperature 10–30°C. Avoid long-term exposure under high temperature above 35°C. High temperature will accelerate aging of the silane sizing agent on fiber surface.

       2. Humidity requirement: Relative humidity ≤65%. Moisture is the biggest hazard. Once the glass fiber absorbs water, the coupling agent will be damaged, resulting in poor resin infiltration and decreased interfacial bonding strength.

       3. Packaging requirement: Keep the original sealed packaging intact before use. Do not tear the plastic film prematurely. After partial use, re-seal the leftover rolls tightly with waterproof film.

       4. Stacking and placement: Place rolls horizontally on pallets, avoid heavy stacking to prevent tape deformation and fiber wrinkling. Keep away from the ground and walls to prevent dampness from floor and wall seepage.

       5. Environment isolation: Keep away from rain, splashing water, acid, alkali, solvent and corrosive vapors. Storage area should be well ventilated and free from direct sunlight. UV radiation will degrade the fiber sizing agent.

Shelf Life of Dry Unidirectional Fiberglass Tape

Under recommended sealed storage conditions, the shelf life of dry unidirectional fiberglass tape is generally 12 months from the production date.

Note: Once the package is opened, use the material as soon as possible within 1 month. If exposed to humid air for a long time, even within the labeled shelf life, performance may drop.

Storage Conditions for Prepreg Unidirectional Fiberglass Tape

Prepreg Unidirectional Glass Fiber Tapes is pre-impregnated with resin system, which has much stricter storage rules.

       1. Cold storage requirement: Most epoxy-based prepreg unidirectional fiberglass tape must be stored at -18°C frozen environment. Low temperature slows down resin cross-linking reaction.

       2. Thaw operation: Take out rolls from freezer and fully thaw in sealed packaging before opening. Prevent condensation water from forming on fiber surface.

       3. Shelf life: Frozen storage shelf life is usually 6–12 months. After thawing at room temperature, the usable out-time is limited, generally only a few days. Expired prepreg will have increased viscosity and cannot fully infiltrate during curing.

Common Storage Risks and Consequences

       1. High humidity absorption: Silane coupling agent hydrolyzes, poor resin wetting, lower tensile strength and interlaminar shear strength.

       2. Direct sunlight / high temperature: Sizing agent aging, fiber surface becomes inactive, composite parts prone to delamination.

       3. Damaged packaging: Dust and contaminants stick to fiber, introducing defects into finished composite components.

       4. Improper stacking: Fiber waves, wrinkles and uneven fiber distribution, reducing load-bearing capacity.

Inspection Before Use

Before cutting and laying up, check the roll appearance:

Check packaging integrity, confirm no water stains, mildew and condensation.

Verify production date and remaining shelf life.

Check tape surface for white bloom, which is typical sign of moisture absorption.

If moisture absorption or bloom is found, performance test should be carried out before mass use.

Summary

Dry Unidirectional Glass Fiber Tapes needs cool, dry, ventilated storage, with temperature controlled at 10–30°C and relative humidity ≤65%, shelf life normally 12 months in sealed package. Prepreg unidirectional fiberglass tape requires frozen storage. Users must protect the original waterproof packaging and avoid moisture, high temperature and ultraviolet light. Good storage management ensures stable fiber performance and reduces scrap rate of composite products.
